Dear SF Hillel Community, I am deeply saddened to hear about the recent vandalism at SF Hillel. As someone who was once both a student and an active member of this vibrant community, I want to extend my heartfelt support and solidarity during this difficult time. Hillel has always been a place of strength, connection, and unity for so many of us, and to see it targeted in this way is truly disheartening. Please know that you are not alone. The Jewish community, both here and across the world, stands with you. As a member of the Jewish sorority, I’ve seen firsthand the resilience and dedication of our community, and I have no doubt that this act of hate will not break the spirit of SF Hillel or its members. While this event is painful, it also serves as a reminder of how important it is to come together, support one another, and continue to build spaces where our culture, faith, and traditions can thrive. I’m here for you and I’m confident that the Hillel community will come out of this even stronger. With solidarity and strength. - Jessica
Dear Students of SF Hillel, As an alumna of SF Hillel and as someone who works in the Jewish community, I cannot even think of how hard it is to go to class on a regular basis in this environment. At my time at SFSU, SF Hillel was my safe haven for all of the horrible things I saw on campus. I wouldn't be the human I am today if it wasn't for that support SF Hillel gave me. Seeing a beautiful place being defaced with antisemitic words shows how much we need Hillel and our community. I hope seeing this hatred doesn't defer anyone to join the community in a Shabbat or even crash on the couches in between classes. You are all stronger and better than this. - B'Shalom, Karen '09
Dear friends, we're with you. Thank you for every Shabbat dinner, every coffee date, every Jewish learning fellowship you participate in - it's you who makes Hillel a safe and joyous space to be Jewish, which has enormous ripple effects in our community. Sending big hugs. - Amanda
As a San Francisco Hillel alumnus, I’m so sorry that this happened, and please know that you have support and care from countless others, both Jewish and not, here in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area! - Melodee
Despite this increase in antisemitism, our Jewish community has grown stronger and unified. We are all here for each other; and will continue our support and demand for justice through these acts of hate. Love always wins. Am yisrael chai. - Emma You are such brave young Jews, standing up with our story. We stand with you. As Haviv Rettig Gur says, Jews who know our own story are undefeatable. Am yisrael chai! Stay proud of your heritage. It's the best way to show the haters that they will lose. - Michael I graduated from SF State University in 1998 and some of my best memories are from my time at SF Hillel. The staff there was so supportive, and it made me feel welcome when often I did not feel that way on campus. |
Dear SF Hillel Students, You are loved and you are not alone. I am sending this message personally, but also on behalf of the members of the Jewish Pride Fund, a giving circle of the Jewish Community federation that made a grant to one of your programs last year (QJew!). Members were devastated to learn about how your safe space on campus was targeted. We are with you! - Danielle
I am with you in this time of reflection and turmoil in and around the SFSU campus. - Barry
We must stand strong in the face of adversity. The vandalism may have uses our symbols, but know the left is strongly in support of our Jewish communities. You have allies in all human rights movements, we will not let our fight become a mask for oppressors! I’m glad you have the Hillel community to support you all during this time. This campus has had more trouble from hate against Jews for a long time. My daughter and son-in-law both went to SF State. I was in university in the 70’s mainly and I never experienced what you have to deal with. Please know that there is a huge Jewish community that has you in their hearts and minds and wishes only great things for you all. Dear SF Hillel and friends, I am both disturbed and appalled at the vandalism that occurred at the SF Hillel Building. My heart is with you all and the Jewish Community at this time. - Eshton |
Believe in the history & teachings of Judaism & you will find much meaning, love & support! -Barry
Sometimes, Jewish students and their allies experience or witness things at school that are inappropriate, unacceptable or uncomfortable. At Hillel, we want to help you have the best experience possible at school, and if something concerning happens, we're here to talk, and help (depending what you want to do).
